I Had A Black Dog

Winston Churchill popularised the phrase ‘Black Dog’ to describe the bouts of depression he experienced for much of his life.

Matthew Johnstone, a sufferer himself, has written and illustrated this moving and uplifting insight into what it’s like to have a Black Dog as a companion, and how he learned to tame it and bring it to heel.

“I like to think of it as an uplifting illustrated book on what it is to have depression,” he writes on his website. Not only was it one of the best things he’s ever done with his life, he says the biggest lesson in making it was that “helping others is one of the greatest ways we can help ourselves.”

We couldn’t agree more. This book, and its follow-up, “Living with a Black Dog” are both International bestsellers.
